A review is systematic only if somebody else could repeat it and reach your numbers. Every search string, every screening decision and every excluded study is recorded, so your PRISMA diagram reconciles and your method section can be defended line by line.

Calling a review systematic is a methodological claim, and it is checkable.
"A search was conducted on Scopus and Web of Science" tells a reader nothing. A systematic review reports the exact Boolean string per database, the fields searched, the date limits and the date it was run โ because reproducibility is the entire claim.
Single-reviewer screening introduces exactly the selection bias the method exists to prevent. Dual independent screening with a recorded agreement statistic, or at minimum a second reviewer on a sample, is what makes the selection defensible.
Records identified, duplicates removed, titles screened, full texts assessed, studies included โ every box must reconcile arithmetically. Examiners check this with a calculator, and a diagram that does not balance undermines everything above it.
Including a weak study and a rigorous one as equal evidence is not synthesis. A named appraisal tool applied to every included study, with the scores reported, is a required stage rather than an optional extra.
Thirty sources discussed thematically with a PRISMA diagram bolted on at the end. If the studies were not selected against pre-stated criteria, the diagram is decoration and an examiner familiar with the method will say so.
A protocol exists to fix your criteria before you see the results, which is what prevents you from quietly adjusting them to suit what you found. Written after screening, it documents nothing and protects nothing.
Told your review isn't systematic enough?Send what you have and the supervisor's comment. We'll tell you which of these six it is before you pay anything.
Diagnose My Review โEight stages, each producing a record you can put in an appendix. Order the whole sequence or the single stage you are stuck on.
PICO for intervention questions, SPIDER for qualitative, PEO for exposure, PCC for scoping. The framework you choose determines your criteria and your search string, so it is settled before anything else moves.
Objectives, criteria, databases, appraisal tool and synthesis method fixed in advance, then registered on PROSPERO or OSF where your field expects it. A registration number in your method section carries real weight with examiners.
Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, IEEE Xplore and ERIC each use different syntax, field tags and truncation. Strings are written natively for each, with the hit count and run date recorded so anyone can repeat them.
Stated as testable rules rather than intentions โ population, study design, language, date range, publication type and setting โ so two reviewers applying them independently reach the same answer.
Title and abstract, then full text, screened independently in Rayyan or Covidence with conflicts resolved and logged. Cohen's kappa reported, and every full-text exclusion given a stated reason for your appendix.
CASP, JBI, Newcastle-Ottawa, MMAT or Cochrane RoB 2 depending on what your included studies actually are. Scored per study, tabulated, and used in the synthesis rather than filed and forgotten.
One row per study with author, year, country, design, sample, measures, findings and appraisal score. It becomes an appendix, and it is the table examiners read before they read your synthesis.
Narrative, thematic or meta-analytic synthesis depending on whether your studies are comparable, closed with a PRISMA 2020 flow diagram whose numbers balance from identification through to inclusion.
Only one stage outstanding?A search strategy, an appraisal round or a PRISMA diagram rebuild can each be ordered alone from RM 190.
Quote Just That Stage โThe method advice is free and it happens before anything is charged.
Step two costs nothing and often changes the plan.Send your question in one sentence and you will hear honestly whether systematic, scoping or a traditional review is the right method.
Get My Method Advice โCompletely, and choosing wrongly costs months. Many candidates need a good traditional review and are talked into a systematic one they cannot resource.
You select what is relevant, organise it thematically and build toward a gap. Selection is guided by judgement, and that is legitimate โ the chapter is assessed on synthesis and argument, not on reproducibility.
Pre-stated criteria, an exhaustive documented search, dual screening, formal appraisal and a reproducible audit trail. It is a study in its own right, with a methodology chapter of its own.
A solid literature review chapter takes weeks. A defensible systematic review takes months and a second screener. Attempting one on a literature review timeline is the most common reason they collapse.
If your question is broad and exploratory, a traditional review serves it better. If it is narrow, answerable and about accumulated evidence, systematic is right. Send us the question and we will say honestly which it is.
Still not sure which one your question needs?Send the question in one sentence. You'll get an honest answer on systematic, scoping or traditional โ and we lose the bigger order about half the time.
Have My Question Assessed โThree different methods with three different standards. Picking the wrong one is a decision you cannot easily reverse in month four.
For a narrow, answerable question where a body of evidence already exists. Full protocol, exhaustive search, dual screening, formal appraisal and a synthesis that weighs studies by quality rather than counting them.
For mapping what exists when the field is broad or emerging. Reported against PRISMA-ScR, uses the PCC framework, and does not require formal quality appraisal โ which makes it achievable on a master's timeline.
Statistical pooling on top of a systematic review, possible only when your studies report comparable effect sizes. Effect sizes pooled, heterogeneity assessed through Iยฒ, forest and funnel plots produced.
Reviews written in BM for programmes that require it. Sources remain mostly English-language indexed journals, so terminology for the method itself โ kriteria kemasukan, penyaringan, penilaian kualiti โ is kept consistent throughout rather than translated section by section.
Journals apply the PRISMA 2020 checklist item by item at submission, and many now require a registration number before review. Prepared against your target journal's requirements with the completed checklist supplied.
Can your timeline actually carry the method?Tell us your deadline and whether a second screener is available. That combination decides which review type is realistic more than the topic does.
Check What's Realistic โThe tool has to match the design of the study being appraised.
Unsure which tool your studies need?Send your included list and we'll name the right instrument for each design โ and tell you if one tool genuinely covers them all.
Match My Appraisal Tool โPeople who have run the method themselves, not writers who have read about it.

Match Me to a Methodologist โSix things that turn "we followed PRISMA" from a sentence in your method section into something you can hand over.
Search strings with hit counts and dates, the screening file with every decision, exclusion reasons at full text, and appraisal scores per study. These become your appendices and they are the evidence the method was followed.
If you searched before writing one, we document what you actually did and describe the limitation honestly. Registering a protocol after seeing your results and presenting it as prior is misrepresentation, not paperwork.
Second-reviewer support is standard research practice, and your criteria govern every decision. Conflicts come back to you to resolve, and the contribution is described accurately in your acknowledgements.
Numbers come out of the screening file rather than being typed to look plausible. If your identification and inclusion figures do not reconcile, the logs show exactly where the discrepancy is.
A large share of candidates who ask for a systematic review have a question a scoping review answers better and a timeline that cannot carry the full method. Hearing that in week one is worth more than the order.
One instrument for every study is the fastest way to signal that appraisal was a box-ticking exercise. RCTs, cohort studies and qualitative work each get the tool built for them.
Missing the logs for work you already did?Send whatever records you kept. Some stages can be reconstructed honestly, and we'll tell you which ones have to be reported as a limitation instead.
See What I Can Recover โS.K. had identified 1,842 records and included 24 studies, but her PRISMA diagram did not balance โ eleven studies disappeared between full-text assessment and inclusion with no exclusion reasons recorded. She had also applied CASP checklists to all 24 studies, four of which were randomised trials needing risk-of-bias assessment instead.
The searches were rerun from her stated criteria, producing 1,798 records. They were imported into Rayyan, deduplicated, and screened again with a second reviewer, giving a kappa of 0.86. Every full-text exclusion now carried a reason โ the eleven missing studies turned out to be twelve, all excluded for population mismatch. Cochrane RoB 2 was applied to the four trials and CASP retained for the rest.
The rebuilt review was accepted with the diagram reconciling exactly. Her examiner asked to see the exclusion log at the viva, which she produced from the appendix. The re-run search was reported transparently as a limitation rather than hidden.
Diagram not balancing?Send the numbers and your screening file. Nine times out of ten the gap is unrecorded full-text exclusions.
Reconcile My PRISMA โA diagram that would not reconcile, screening done in an overwritten spreadsheet, and one appraisal tool applied to four different study designs.
Searches reconstructed and logged, screening redone in Rayyan with a second reviewer and kappa reported, appraisal split by design, diagram rebuilt from the file.
The exclusion log existed. When her examiner asked for it at the viva she had it, which ended the question in seconds.
A reviewer comment that his reported Scopus string did not execute, and no record of which fields or date limits had been applied.
Strings rewritten natively for each database and tested, hits and run dates logged, extraction rebuilt as a comparison matrix of approaches and datasets.
Every string in the paper now runs. Referees in technology venues genuinely paste them in and try.
A request for a full systematic review on a nine-month timeline, with a broad mapping question and no second screener available.
Redirected to a scoping review, question reframed with PCC, protocol written, and reporting built against PRISMA-ScR instead of PRISMA 2020.
The method matched both the question and the time available. A weak systematic review scores worse than a strong scoping review.
Recognise your review in one of these?Send us the one that matches your situation and we'll tell you what the same fix would involve for yours.
Mine Looks Like That One โ"Eleven studies vanished between full text and inclusion and I couldn't explain any of them. My screening spreadsheet had been overwritten four times."

"A referee said my reported Scopus string wouldn't execute. It didn't. They rewrote every string natively and tested each one."
"I had used CASP on four randomised trials. RoB 2 was the right tool and my examiner would have known that immediately."
"I asked them to backdate my protocol and they refused, then showed me how to report it honestly as a limitation instead. It passed."
"Kappa of 0.86 on dual screening, and every conflict came back to me to resolve. It stayed my review throughout."
"Saya sangka semua kajian boleh digabungkan dalam meta-analisis. Mereka jelaskan kenapa tidak, dan sintesis naratif jadi pilihan yang betul."
"Every appendix came from a real log โ search hits, dates, exclusions, appraisal scores. My examiner asked for two of them at the viva."

Start With the Protocol โMost researchers need two or three stages, not all eight.

| Meta-Analysis Add-On | Forest Plot ยท Iยฒ | +RM 900 | 2โ3 Weeks |
Timelines here are in weeks rather than days because the method genuinely takes that long. Every stage delivers its logs, and those logs become your appendices.
Stages are priced separately: a registered protocol from RM 450, a search strategy RM 380, second-reviewer screening RM 620, quality appraisal RM 540 and a PRISMA diagram rebuild RM 190. A full scoping review starts at RM 1,800, a full systematic review at RM 2,400 for master's level and RM 3,800 for doctoral or publication work. Most researchers order two or three stages rather than everything.
A literature review selects sources by judgement and builds an argument toward a gap. A systematic review is a method: criteria stated before searching, an exhaustive documented search, dual independent screening, formal quality appraisal and a reproducible audit trail. The first is assessed on synthesis, the second on whether someone else could repeat it and reach your numbers.
For health-related reviews it is expected, and many journals now require a registration number before they will send a review out. Outside health, PROSPERO may not accept your topic and OSF is the usual alternative. Either way the point is the same: your criteria are fixed and timestamped before you see what the searches return.
No, but it changes what you can honestly claim. The right move is documenting what you actually did, stating that the protocol was not registered in advance, and reporting it as a limitation. We will not backdate a protocol and present it as prior โ that is misrepresentation rather than paperwork, and it is exactly the kind of thing that unravels badly.
You can, and you must then declare it as a limitation, because single-reviewer screening reintroduces the selection bias the method exists to remove. Many Malaysian master's candidates have no second screener available, which is a legitimate reason to consider a scoping review instead. Where we act as second reviewer, your criteria govern every decision and the contribution is acknowledged accurately.
Almost always the gap is full-text exclusions recorded without reasons, or a screening file that was overwritten. The diagram has to be built from your screening records rather than typed to look plausible โ identification, duplicates removed, screened, assessed and included must reconcile arithmetically. Send your numbers and the file and we will find where it breaks.
It depends on the design of each included study, not on your field. Randomised trials need Cochrane RoB 2, observational studies suit Newcastle-Ottawa, qualitative work suits CASP or JBI, and mixed designs are handled by MMAT. If your included studies are themselves reviews, you need AMSTAR-2. Applying one tool to every study is a visible error.
Often yes, and we say so more than students expect. A scoping review suits broad mapping questions, follows PRISMA-ScR and the PCC framework, and does not require formal quality appraisal โ which makes it achievable on a master's timeline without a second screener. A well-executed scoping review scores better than a systematic review that could not be completed properly.
Six to ten weeks at master's level and eight to fourteen for doctoral or publication work, with a scoping review at four to seven. Screening is the bottleneck โ 1,500 records take real hours twice over with dual screening. Anyone quoting a full systematic review in ten days is describing something else.
Only if your included studies report comparable effect sizes on comparable outcomes. Pooling incomparable results produces a number that means nothing, and reviewers will say so. Where pooling is not justified, a well-argued narrative or thematic synthesis is the correct answer rather than a weaker option.
Yes, at the same rates. Sources remain mostly English-language indexed journals, so the methodological terminology โ kriteria kemasukan, penyaringan tajuk dan abstrak, penilaian kualiti โ has to stay consistent across every section. That consistency is where most translated reviews come apart, not the translation itself.
AI-assisted prioritisation is now built into tools like Rayyan and it can genuinely speed up title and abstract screening. What it cannot be is your second independent reviewer, because the whole point of dual screening is two people applying the criteria separately and disagreeing where they disagree. If you use any automation, PRISMA 2020 expects you to report it in your selection process โ so declare it rather than quietly relying on it.
No, and this is the most dangerous place to try. A fabricated reference in a narrative review is embarrassing; a fabricated study inside a systematic review corrupts your extraction table, your appraisal scores and your PRISMA counts at once. Your included studies must come out of a documented database search you can rerun โ if a study cannot be traced back to a logged search, it does not belong in the review.
Two separate declarations, and students usually miss one. Your university will have a policy on generative AI in the written thesis. Separately, PRISMA 2020 asks you to report any automation tools used in the selection and data collection stages โ that is a methodological disclosure, not a misconduct question, and it belongs in your method section whether or not your faculty asks for it.
Run it. That settles the question in about a minute, and it is what your supervisor is really asking you to do. Generated strings tend to look correct while using field tags or operators the database does not accept, so they return zero results or silently ignore half the string. Paste each one into the database it was written for, record the hit count and the date, and put those in your appendix โ a string with a logged result behind it stops being a suspicion.
You can draft with it, but what comes back is almost always untestable. Criteria like "studies of good methodological quality" or "recent and relevant research" read fine and cannot be applied consistently by two reviewers, which is the only thing criteria have to do. Yours need to be rules โ population, design, language, date range, publication type โ specific enough that two people screening separately reach the same verdict on the same record.
Not reliably, and the errors are the kind nobody notices until a viva. Models misread table values, report a sample size from the wrong subgroup, and confuse a cohort study with a cross-sectional one. Your extraction table goes into an appendix where an examiner can open any row and compare it against the original paper, so every cell has to come from someone who actually read the study.
No. Appraisal is a judgement about how a study was conducted, made domain by domain after reading the full text โ whether allocation was concealed, whether confounders were handled, whether the sampling was defensible. A model given an abstract produces scores that look plausible and correspond to nothing in the paper. If your appraisal scores cannot be justified out loud, they will not survive being questioned.
Treat the two halves differently. Your discussion and background can be rewritten normally โ rebuild the argument and put your own included studies back into it. Your method section cannot, because it has to match your logs exactly: the database names, the string, the hit counts, the screening numbers, the appraisal tool. Do not paraphrase those into something that reads better than it is true. Fix the prose around them and leave every figure exactly as your records say.
Not sure your question suits a systematic review?Send it. We will tell you honestly whether systematic, scoping or a traditional review is the right method before you commit months to it.
